AD-HD – Neurofeedback, a Path to Appropriate Behavior

Neurofeedback is sometimes referred to as Neurobiofeedback, or Neurotherapy.

Using this form of neurological feedback, with other such techniques as respiratory patterning and pulse monitoring, offers great possibilities for treating AD-HD both in children and adults.

AD-HD is not just a problem of inattention and hyperactivity, it is a cluster of serious problems.

Slow brain wave activity from the frontal lobes is at the heart of AD-HD.

From the latest, ongoing research on the brain, we know that we can retrain the brain.

Through the technique of Neurofeedback, which is a sophisticated form of biofeedback, the brain can actually be trained to speed up its brain waves.

The good news is that the results can be permanent.

There are hundreds of documented cases showing the validity of considering Neurofeedback as a drug-free option for being in control of the symptoms of AD-HD.

The process is non-intrusive, fast, painless, with no discomfort, and it is cost-effective.

The duration of treatment will depend on the individual child, on average about three months.

Treatment sessions are usually twice a week.

The child is connected to a specialised EEG (Electroencephalogram) computer with a monitor, and learns to speed up slow brainwave patterns.

Through EEG monitoring, researchers have found associations between abnormal brainwave patterns and violence.

It works on the same basis as an electrocardiogram (EKG) which tells you how your heart is doing.

The heart runs on a specific electrical waveform, just like a generator.

The brain is just another type of generator, certainly more complex than the heart, but as an analogy, it operates on a similar principle.

When you are hooked up to the EEG computer, by using varying stimuli, you can experiment with your child’s brainwaves and speed them up or slow them down.

In the case of an AD-HD child, you would want to speed up the brainwave, and therefore use appropriate stimuli and monitoring.

While looking at the screen, your child then gets to ‘see’ the feeling when the brain waves are operating at the desired speed.

The computer gives a tonal signal or a light signal when your child is producing the desired brain waves.

These states on desired brainwaves can be achieved by your child using imagery or visualisation, or altering her or his breathing patterns.

We all know that slow breathing patterns relax you.

Conversely, when you use faster and deeper breathing patterns, you get the brain to function faster, to achieve Beta brainwave ranges.

Just to clarify each of the brainwave categories, going from slower to faster:

o Delta waves are evident in the sleeping brain

o Theta waves are associated with a trance state, like the ‘twilight zone’

o Alpha waves are evident when you are calm and relaxed, yet focused

o Beta waves are a problem-solving or excited state

We know that we can change our autonomic nervous system, ie our blood pressure, heart rate, brain waves, and be very powerful in our own self-healing.

However, there is no one-cure-fits-all, when we are talking about AD-HD.

Neurofeedback is another tool in your multi-modal strategies toolkit to give your 5 to 15 year old AD-HD-diagnosed child the best possible life, and to assist you and other members of your family to also lead to a fulfilling, happy, land loving existence.

There are a number of providers around the world who offer Neurofeedback as a treatment for AD-HD children.

Really do your research to make sure they are a bona fide facility, and you are comfortable with how they operate.
